A Close Call with Scammers
Karen Welsh, a health executive from Lancashire, faced a near disaster when trying to fly to Brisbane, Australia, to visit an unwell family member. Scammers reached out to her via social media, nearly stealing her savings and ruining her much-needed trip.
The Flight Dilemma
Ms. Welsh found suitable flights from Manchester via Doha on Qatar Airways, where she is entitled to a discount as an NHS worker. However, upon attempting to finalize her booking, the website stalled and wouldn't progress to payment.
Seeking Help
Desperate for assistance, she reached out to Qatar Airways support on X (formerly Twitter), but after six days of back-and-forth communication, she had no resolution. In frustration, she posted a public message, which led to a direct message from an account called ASK Service Team, impersonating Qatar Airways.
The Scam Unfolds
She received a call from a WhatsApp number in Kenya, claiming to be customer support. The scammer instructed her to download the WorldRemit payment app due to supposed issues with Qatar's payment platform.
Initially, Ms. Welsh was suspicious but found WorldRemit to be a legitimate service. The scammer then guided her to log in using a password they provided and to send an authorization link to them. It was at this point that she realized something was wrong and asked for official confirmation via email, which the scammer never provided.
Potential Consequences
Had she fallen for the scam, the criminals would have taken control of her WorldRemit account and emptied her savings. Ms. Welsh expressed her shock at how close she came to being scammed, noting that frustrated customers often feel relieved when someone appears to offer help.
A Cautionary Tale
Reflecting on her experience, she pointed out red flags, including the suspicious Twitter account with only one follower. Ms. Welsh hopes her story serves as a warning to others about the dangers of online scams. She emphasized the emotional impact of potentially losing the chance to visit her seriously ill uncle, highlighting the profound loss that such scams can inflict.
Now booked with Emirates for her trip, Ms. Welsh continues to receive unwanted calls from other scammers, showcasing the ongoing risks associated with sharing personal information online.
