AARP Virginia's Concerns on SSA's New Policy
AARP Virginia State Director Jim Dau expressed serious concerns regarding the Social Security Administration's (SSA) recent decision to mandate in-person identity verification. This abrupt change is expected to create significant obstacles for older Americans who depend on Social Security benefits.

Dau stated, “The SSA’s new policy will force many residents in Virginia to travel distances exceeding 40 miles to access the nearest SSA office. This will disproportionately affect those with mobility challenges or limited transportation options, particularly older adults.”
In Virginia, nearly 1.6 million residents receive Social Security benefits, with about 200,000 of them being Social Security Disability recipients. Alarmingly, over 94,000 of these beneficiaries are children. Given that more than 17% of Virginia’s population is aged 65 and older, this policy change places additional burdens on the most vulnerable citizens.
With approximately 1 million members, AARP stands as the largest organization advocating for individuals over 50 and their families in Virginia.
